Overview

God damn, Sam, this guitar can jam! You'll want to hop on the next red-eye to our local Teesside Airport to collect this beauty!

A guitar fit for a king, this superb Gibson Custom Shop Collector's Choice #16 Aged Ed King "Redeye" 1959 Les Paul has just landed with us at Smokestack Guitars.

Collector's Choice series guitars are some of the most prized Custom Shop releases. Gibsons from these limited edition runs, crafted between 2010 and 2017, capture the finest of details from the spectacular source instruments they replicate, a mix of famous guitars from renowned players or superb examples belonging to prominent collectors.

Utilising superior materials, vintage construction methods and finishing techniques, alongside highly accurate digital-scanning technology, these outstanding (predominantly golden-era) instruments have been reissued in breathtaking detail. The Aged versions mirror the wear, patina, aesthetic and tone of the original guitars with exactitude and precision. The results are simply stunning, and this #CC 16A "Redeye" #47 is no exception!

This baby will have you singing songs about the Southland in no time! We love the particularly dark, characterful rosewood fretboard and the beautiful rippling flame maple top on this example. The one-piece quartersawn mahogany neck has a hot hide-glue construction and a "precise '59 profile"; with measurements taken from Ed's original, it feels supremely comfortable in the hand!

Moving on to the electronics, we have a Zebra Burstbucker #3 with Alnico V magnets for the neck pickup. This has been chosen as a perfect match to Ed's original, a notably hot PAF for its time. For the bridge position, a Custombucker with Alnico 3 magnets has been wound to closely match the original's. The traditional 2x master volume, 2x tone & 3-way toggle switch are complemented by vintage-style 500k CTS potentiometers and Bumblebee capacitors.

This guitar comes from one of the UK's finest collections and is presented in immaculate condition throughout. It has been safely stored away in its case for nearly all of its life; as such, there are limited signs of playwear in addition to the factory aging. The frets only show limited signs of light use.

Please see above for full specifications, or contact us for more information.

The weight of this guitar is 3.98kg (8.77lbs).

The case candy includes the Gibson Custom Shop Certificate of Authenticity, Pre-Pack Checklist, Gibson hang tags, case key, dealer fret protector and dealer USB. (Please note: the USB was intended to have their original store photographs of the guitar but they mistakenly loaded it with pictures from another one of their Redeye's by mistake).

The original Custom Shop Aged Hardshell case is included. It does have some light surface wear from storage. As this guitar has come from one of the UK's finest collections, the case has been numbered "53" in marker pen on the front spine.

Shipping information is available below. This Redeye is feature-packed - if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us.

Consigned goods: Pre-owned item sold on behalf of a private client. No VAT is charged and no VAT invoice is available.

What Gibson Says

The sidekick to Ed King, whose credits include member of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Strawberry Alarm Clock and co-writer of Sweet Home Alabama. When Ed agreed to work with Gibson Custom on his Collector's Choice model, we were all taken by the guitar's looks. But beneath its beauty laid a rare mix of feel and tone, brought together in a 1959 Les Paul that's as well rounded an example as we've had the pleasure to recreate.

Collector's Choice #16 captures all of the beauty, the tone and the feel of the original right down to the subtle traces of red in key areas of the guitar, where it was unevenly exposed to UV light over the years. It features all of the 2013 Historic Les Paul specifications including aniline dye back and sides, custom wound Custom Bucker pickups and hot hide glue neck fit.

The Collector's Choice ™ '59 Les Paul series makes it possible to own a recreation of a specific guitar from the few Les Paul Standards created in 1959. Once again working with a specific '59 and its owner allowed Gibson Custom full access so that it could be analyzed, digitally scanned and measured from every conceivable perspective. Now Gibson Custom can faithfully recreate the individual personality of a specific serial number of '59 bringing its magic within reach of a limited number of owners. The details of finish, material, wear and tone in the Collector's Choice ™ range are as near to a perfect recreation of each guitar's current condition as is humanly possible.
