Overview

It's an immense honour to be offering for sale one of the most collectable modern '59 Les Paul Reissues in existence! This mint condition Gibson Custom Shop Played, Aged & Signed Ace Frehley '59 'Burst in Dirty Lemon Frehley Burst is #50/50 from the highly coveted 2015 release.

Tom Murphy and the Custom Shop, following Ace's detailed recollections, went into fine detail to faithfully recreate the '59 Les Paul Standard Ace notably claimed was his best-ever guitar. Played & signed by Ace (including his Ace of Hearts doodle), aged by the legendary Tom Murphy, and with a simply outstanding downward-chevron flame maple top - this amazing instrument is nothing short of jaw-dropping to witness firsthand.

The lore around Ace's original '59 'Burst (#9-1878) is a Rock 'n' Roll saga, unfortunately one ending in heartbreak for Ace. He purchased it for $4000 in 1977 from Richard Friedman/We Buy Guitars. While it wasn't a guitar Ace was frequently seen with, it was the one he was heard playing in the studio more than any other between 1977 and 1985.

Ace speaking on his '59 Burst to Guitar World for their May 1997 issue:

GW: "What is the best guitar you've ever owned?"

Frehley: "It was probably my '59 Flametop Standard. I bought it for $4,000, and I recorded every track on my first solo album with that guitar. Then, in 1985, I ended up hocking it for $6,000 while I was on my way to Atlantic City. I just felt lucky. I thought I was going to go down there, win a bunch of money and get the guitar out of hock. That didn't happen. I ended up losing about $20,000. Somehow, there was a misunderstanding. I thought that I had six months to get the guitar out of hock, but the guy thought that I was selling it to him. Somebody snatched it up right away. I actually found the guy who bought it, and I had the chance to play it again. He had changed the nut from bone to metal and had done something to the frets. When I played it, it didn't feel like it used to. It didn't knock me out, so I didn't feel that bad that it wasn't mine anymore."

Speaking to the guitar's current owner, Al Ramano, Ace was quoted as saying, "It wouldn't go out of tune. It's a truly magical guitar. It's the best one I have ever played, owned or ever seen".

It is exceptionally rare for an Aged & Signed Frehley '59 'Burst to appear on the UK market, and this one is a particularly stunning example. Do not miss this opportunity to secure #50, the very last one of this extremely limited run!

The guitar comes from one of the UK's finest collections, originally purchased new from Andertons, it has been stored away for most of its life. The guitar itself is presented in mint, collector-grade condition showing extremely limited evidence of prior play; there is one tiny superficial mark on the toggle switch cavity plate, but this could be replaced (the plastic reissue cavity plate is also included in the case).

The original hardshell case is included, as is a very rare Gibson Custom dust cover. Both are in excellent condition. Please note: as this guitar has come from one of the UK's very finest collections, the case has been numbered "54" in marker pen on the front spine between the two leftmost latches.

The case candy includes the Certificate of Authenticity, hang tags, pre-pack checklist, plastic tremolo cavity plate, case key and Anderstons dealer USB key with product photographs.

Please see above for full specifications, or contact us for more information!

The weight of this guitar is 4.21kg (9.28lbs).
