Overview

For those of you who have been lusting after the Gary Moore-owned '84 Hamer Standard that we recently got in stock, but aren't wanting to stretch your budget quite that far...we're pleased to have another, exquisite, custom-order Hamer Standard in Natural with the elusive headstock veneer to match the top!

As the pioneers of handmade boutique guitar craftsmanship, it should come as no surprise that Hamer has pulled out all the stops on this showcase Standard custom order! This outstanding 1986 Hamer Standard not only features a factory-fitted Floyd Rose, but also a beautiful one-piece figured maple top! This is a perfect addition, married up to the one-piece mahogany back.

The natural maple top and dark rosewood (1/4" thick) fretboard have been bound in cream ivoroid, nicely tying together the aesthetic of the contrasting tonewoods. A particularly iridescent selection of mother-of-pearl has been picked for the crown inlays; the quality of Hamer's marquetry on display here is first-rate!

The neck itself utilises Hamer's Stressed-Neck System. This is crafted from a beautiful piece of maple. The billet is cut into three sections with the center section oriented so that the grain opposes the two outer pieces, resulting in exceptional stability. We'd best categorise the neck as having a slim "C" profile. The neck measures approximately 42.5mm wide at the nut and 51.9mm at the 12th fret.

You'd be forgiven for thinking this Standard is overly heavy due to its materials and size. However, at 4.07kg/8.97lbs (w/o tremolo arm), it's towards the low end of the scale for a traditionally constructed Les Paul, and this guitar is really well-balanced. Anyone playing it for the first time will be pleasantly surprised!

The neck pickup is a DiMarzio PAF with an output of 8.47k. It is well-suited to the neck position, offering plenty of clarity while still providing warmth. At the bridge, we have a Hamer Slammer (also made by DiMarzio) with a hotter 10.67k output. It features lots of articulation with plenty of punch!

All wiring and electronics on the guitar appear to be untouched from when it left the Arlington Heights factory in '86. The three original Hamer potentiometers (2 volume, 1 tone) are still present and there's no sign of any modification. The electronic cavity and tremolo/toggle switch cavity plates are also original, with the former being aluminium (Hamer changed the design of this previously oval-shaped plate to a triangular aluminium one in 1978). All screws on the pickup rings and backplates match and appear to be original.

As a vintage instrument, this Standard is in very good condition throughout. In short, it's a neat example of a vintage Standard. Since the guitar is from '86, it has plenty of patina as you'd expect. There are some general light dings/marks, signs of playwear and some binding shrinkage. It should be noted that the lacquer has tasteful checking throughout.

The original frets are in excellent condition (still plenty of life left), as is the rosewood fretboard. There is a small screw hole on the headstock where, at some point, a different truss rod cover was fitted.

On the hardware side, the Floyd Rose is partially blocked off, so it's set to dive-only. On the high E tuner, the metal "lug", where the screw sits connecting it to the back of the headstock, has fractured. The screw is holding down both parts firmly, but it's just something to be aware of.

The guitar comes with its original Hamer hardshell case. Please note that there is external wear on the case.
