...This instrument is intended to be a "concert level" heirloom quality guitar, and I believe that this is how they will be viewed in the years to come."

Overview

We usually have a lot to say about PRS Private Stock guitars that we have the immense privilege of stocking...however, on this very special Collection #48 acoustic, Paul Reed Smith himself has said it best in his included signed letter, please see below!

This concert-level acoustic is an exceptionally rare Private Stock from the highly coveted Collection Series. With outstanding tonewoods selected by Paul himself and a "holy grail" pernambuco neck (discontinued on Private Stocks for over a decade), this guitar is practically the acoustic version of the iconic Private Stock Violin (we have Violin #49/50 available for sale in our other items; we also had #44/50, but that was snapped up!).

As the photographs attest, this guitar is in mint condition throughout; there are no chips or dings anywhere. There is some exceptionally minor patina from a tiny amount of use; however, for a 2011 guitar, this is as mint as it gets without the guitar being sealed away in a vault for its whole life! The frets are in immaculate condition and show virtually no signs of wear.

The only thing to note is PRS have kindly supplied a fresh set of ebony bridge pins with MOP dot inlays. This is after one of the original bridge pins, made from ebony and mammoth iv. went missing. As they no longer make mammoth iv. parts/inlays, they provided the ebony & MOP alternative instead, five of the original bridge pins are included in the case.

The weight of this guitar is 2.73kg (6.02lbs).

The case candy includes the Private Stock Certificate of Authenticity, signed letter from Paul, Operating Instructions, Registration card, case keys and Private Stock Collection USB drive with build photographs (including of Paul selecting the tonewoods, signing the headstock and testing the guitar).

The original Private Stock Paisley hardshell case is included, with the MODCAT sticker still present. The case is in excellent condition with only minor signs of wear from storage.

This guitar has come from one of the UK's very finest collections; as such, the case has been numbered "9" in marker pen on the front spine, between the left-most latches (please see case pic).

What Paul Says About The Collection #48 Acoustic:

"Dear Collection Dealers, Distributors and Highly Valued Customers,

This Tony McManus/Martin Simpson Special Limited Collection instrument is from the second batch of Collection Acoustic Series, built in the last quarter of 2011.

The back and sides on these Collection instruments are made from African Blackwood. This true rosewood is believed by a high percentage of guitar makers as being the best sounding rosewood on the planet. It is very dark in color and has beautiful grain that can be seen in a bright light.

The top is built from an old batch of very stiff Sitka bearclaw. For every top that was considered, only a third of these old tops were deemed good enough to use for this run. You can recognise the old age of the wood just from the color. The top has been in no way stained or toned.

The neck is made of Pernambuco, which is a very rare material now only available on the Collection Series Instruments. We allowed the natural color of this wood to show through. The wood can be anywhere from bright orange to milky brown in color. The extraordinary part is this wood has a high speed of sound travel through it than any other wood. When someone buys a $35,000 violin bow, it is made from Pernambuco.

When the first one of these instruments was assembled, my thought was, "Wow, that sounds good!". It is extremely even sounding and different than any acoustic we had made in the past. On top of that, the neck width is something we have not attempted before. It is exactly between a Martin Simpson and Tony McManus model spec. I really like it!

This instrument is intended to be a "concert level" heirloom quality guitar, and I believe that this is how they will be viewed in the years to come.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Paul Reed Smith"
